Have An Irrational Fear Of Spiders? You Can Beat It

by Alan B. Densky, CH

It's normal for all people to experience some fears, but suffering from a phobia is a more significant issue. A phobia is an overblown fear that a sufferer cannot control. Phobias are defined as a variety of anxiety disorder, and often trigger nervousness and anxiety attacks in a sufferer. When an individual has an intense phobia, they get so anxious to get away from their fear that it interferes with their daily activities and their ability to function in life.

Among the most common phobias are claustrophobia, a fear of enclosed spaces, acrophobia, the fear of heights, and arachnophobia, the fear of spiders. Arachnophobia is the number one most common phobia. While lots of people have a fear of spiders, people with arachnophobia experience an abnormal amount of fear. Even a photo or drawing of an arachnid can make some arachnophobes distressed. Some people have anxiety attacks or get hysterical at the sight of an arachnid. They might do anything in order to avoid a spider; for instance, people with extreme arachnophobia might attempt to jump out of a moving vehicle if they see a spider next to them.

Sufferers often feel embarrassed by their unrestrained reactions. Other people and even the sufferers themselves might find their behavior irrational. Their fear of spiders and their reaction to the creatures may escalate into other problems as well. Arachnophobia and other phobias may lead to a condition known as agoraphobia.

Agoraphobia may arise when an individual is afraid of being in any potentially stressful area or situation. For an individual with arachnophobia, this could mean avoiding any area a spider could be hiding, unfamiliar places, and even avoiding leaving the house or going outside altogether. This can negatively interfere with a person's quality of life. A person may be worried about having anxiety attacks or humiliating him or herself by losing control. Many people find themselves chronically stressed out over these fears.

People with phobias often struggle to control their fears. This is due to the fact that the root of the phobia exists at the unconscious level of the mind; so conscious willpower or effort will not work to control a phobia. A phobia is most effectively dealt with at the unconscious level, which is why Ericksonian hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques are the most effective phobia treatments.

There are many different programs available for treating phobias. Most utilize older hypnotic techniques that depend on the use of post-hypnotic suggestions with highly exact wording to combat fears. In this day and age, post-hypnotic suggestions often don't work because our generation has a tendency to question and analyze everything. And since today's generation is likely to do the opposite of what they are told, post-hypnotic suggestions are ineffective and they experience an entirely conflicting response.

Ericksonian hypnosis therapy is different from traditional hypnotherapy because it uses indirect suggestions that are hidden in conversation. This makes them hard for the conscious mind to resist, so they will usually make it through to the unconscious level and be adopted.

The typical procedure begins by using relaxation hypnosis to make you feel completely relaxed and calm. Then, instead of simply "telling" your unconscious mind what to do, Ericksonian techniques use stories and metaphors to lead your mind into a desirable line of thought.

NLP treatments work by targeting the particular thought process that generates an extreme phobia and using it to eliminate the fear. Because of this, NLP will work on all phobias.

People respond much better to the combination of NLP and Ericksonian techniques than to traditional hypnosis because instead of hearing direct commands, the unconscious mind is persuaded to follow a different, more logical thought process. These hypnosis programs work well for people who are logical, critical thinkers and people who like to think independently.

You do not need a unique hypnosis program for each different phobia. One program that includes multiple sessions containing the right combination of Ericksonian hypnotherapy and NLP techniques can treat any phobia. Furthermore, a well-designed program will work for anyone. The combination of different techniques in several different sessions ensures success for anyone who uses them. By completing each step of the program, people often amaze themselves at how easily they triumph over their fears.

Ericksonian hypnotherapy and NLP focus on changing irrational behaviors and fears into calm, collected responses. For many individuals struggling with disabling fears such as an irrational fear of spiders, this is a life-changing treatment. Hypnosis is a powerful tool for beating fears and anxieties to live a fuller, better life.
