Carcinophobia and Hypnosis

by Alan Densky

The fear of cancer, carcinophobia, is one of the most familiar phobias, and it isn't hard to see why. Nobody wishes to suffer from cancer or see someone they love suffering from it. Although it is normal to want to avoid getting sick, people with cancer phobia have an extreme amount of fear that often dominates their lives. Overcoming the fear of cancer used to take a long time, but with more understanding of the condition and improved treatments, this has changed. Proven hypnosis therapy techniques can help people regain their health and happiness.

It isn't hard to see what might lead to carcinophobia. This fear is linked to a fear of illness, death, and loss of control. In many cases, people feel traumatized by a friend's struggle with illness. People who have lost a loved one to cancer, or face the threat of cancer, live in fear of the day when they develop cancer.

The anxiety brought on by the fear of cancer may lead people to make extreme decisions. Many sufferers constantly go to hospitals to confirm they are not sick, while others avoid the doctor altogether, afraid of discovering that they have an illness. Phobia sufferers will become worried if they feel the slightest symptoms of illness, such as a migraine, and wonder if it is a sign of cancer. They might go to great lengths to avoid becoming ill.

People experiencing carcinophobia often feel like they have much to fear. It is a persistent fear that can affect both genders. An individual might think, "Who will care for the family if I get sick?" or dwell on other critical issues. The phobia can be unbearable for sufferers and their families.

Many people can "control" their fears by avoiding the cause of their anxiety. Arachnophobia sufferers can often get along by staying away from spiders, and claustrophobia sufferers take care to avoid tight, enclosed areas such as elevators. The fear of cancer, however, is different. The fear is primarily triggered by an individual's innermost ideas and anxieties. It can be unbearable for someone to have a fear they simply cannot avoid. This puts most people with the phobia in a chronic state of panic.

Many phobia treatments are in use today. Common ones include therapy and anxiety medication. Talk therapy can generate good results, but it may take a long time, up to several months for some patients. Prescription medication works to relieve an individual's anxiety, but it doesn't treat the underlying causes of a phobia. Hypnosis is another choice that produces permanent results in a shorter period of time than other types of treatment. Hypnosis is a leading choice because it's an effective, safe, and non-invasive choice of treatment.

Hypnotherapy combines stress-relief techniques with fear dissociation to rapidly eliminate a phobia. A good program will start with stress-relief therapy to help alleviate the emotional stress caused by fear. Once a person feels relaxed and stress-free, hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques work to guide the unconscious mind into adopting a phobia-free thought process.

Conventional hypnosis uses direct, post-hypnotic commands to eliminate a fear. This method is very successful when an individual is receptive to it. The problem is, these conventional techniques may not work because many people are inclined to question direct suggestions and unconsciously reject direct suggestions.

A severe phobia such as carcinophobia requires a more advanced type of treatment such as Ericksonian hypnotherapy. This type of hypnosis works best for those who are analytical, and who are experiencing recurring anxiety and fear. It uses indirect suggestions embedded in metaphors, stories, and conversations to help them overcome their anxieties.

NLP is a technology that does not rely upon suggestion at all, so it can work for everybody. A simplified explanation is that NLP provides tools to train the unconscious mind to use the same thought processes that are causing a symptom or problem, to eliminate it.

Since hypnosis and NLP work at the unconscious level, users report feeling much more in control and comfortable using these therapies.

With Conventional Hypnotherapy, programs generally must be specific to each phobia. An additional benefit of a well designed Ericksonian hypnosis and NLP program is that both are suitable for use on any phobia, or even several phobias. This can be a great benefit to some cancer phobia sufferers who also struggle with other anxiety disorders, such as general germophobia or hypochondria.

Carcinophobia is a serious condition, but one that can be eliminated by appropriate hypnotherapy techniques. NLP techniques have become a popular fear remedy because of their ability to treat the underlying cause of all anxiety disorders along with the signs and symptoms. Sophisticated Ericksonian hypnosis therapy and NLP techniques can help even the most serious phobia patients beat their anxieties permanently.
