How To Get Away From The Grasp Of A Social Phobia

by Alan B. Densky, CH

One of the most common phobias is social phobia, a condition in which a person is scared of being in a social setting. An individual with social phobia experiences devastating fear that impacts important aspects of their life.

People with social phobia are very self-conscious and worried about what others may think or say about them. They are usually afraid of voicing their opinions, out of fear that they might be judged or berated. Those with social phobia tend to look down on themselves or suffer from negative feelings about themselves. They are often worried about being noticed by other people and find socializing to be very terrifying.

A person with social anxieties may seem "shy," but in a phobia, this is taken to extremes. For instance, if you have social phobia, you might hesitate to make a crucial phone call because you are nervous about talking on the telephone. You dial the number, but you are so nervous that you "freeze up" or forget what you were going to say. Although it can happen to everyone once in awhile, for a person with social phobia it may occur every single time, to the point where they find it difficult to make any calls.

Perhaps it is the night before an important meeting at work and you find yourself unable to fall asleep. You dread the idea of being in front of your supervisor and all your colleagues watching as you present a new idea or project. You can't stop yourself from feeling very embarrassed and self-conscious. Even after the meeting, you keep overanalyzing everything you said and did. You are afraid that you humiliated yourself in front of your colleagues by stuttering or saying something wrong.

Or perhaps you would like to go to parties and make friends, but you avoid socializing because you are nervous about introducing yourself to someone new. You find crowded parties intimidating and the idea of meeting someone new frightens you. You worry about what you will say, or that you will get rejected. You might end up staying at home a lot because you are too scared about going out. These are only some examples of the way social phobias can influence us.

Social phobias are irrational fears that can prevent you from reaching your professional goals or fully enjoying your life. But even people who know their fears are irrational may not be able to rid themselves of their fears. People with social anxiety disorder would love to be more social and feel confident around others, but are too scared to try. In spite of their conscious desires and best efforts, they cannot eliminate their phobia because every phobia is based in the unconscious mind. Ericksonian hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques are the most helpful phobia treatments because they work at this unconscious level.

It can be difficult for sufferers of social phobia to get help because they are too afraid to see a counselor or discuss their condition. This is why hypnosis therapy programs work great for them. The programs promote a tranquil and confidence-boosting frame of mind in a private setting, without being intimidating or overwhelming.

The first stage in a good phobia program is relaxation therapy. Hypnosis is a powerful tool for relieving your stress and tension. When you are anxiety free, hypnotherapy techniques will form positive ideas in your unconscious mind and end your phobia. NLP techniques will eliminate your fears by directly targeting the thought process that causes a phobia.

In conventional hypnosis therapy, specifically worded post-hypnotic suggestions are utilized to address each different phobia. The problem is, people tend to ignore being merely told what to do or think, so conventional hypnosis therapy doesn't always work. A phobia requires the use of Ericksonian Hypnotherapy and NLP.

Ericksonian hypnosis therapy techniques are more effective than conventional hypnosis therapy because they use suggestions that are not obvious to the conscious mind, versus direct suggestions. These suggestions are hidden in conversation, in different stories and metaphors, to convince the unconscious mind to follow a new line of thinking. This is why Ericksonian hypnosis therapy is far more advanced than traditional hypnotherapy and much harder for the unconscious mind to reject.

A single program that has Ericksonian hypnotic therapy and NLP techniques can treat any phobia, in any individual. This is because a variety of techniques are used together to increase their effectiveness. People are often in awe of the apparently miraculous changes they can get through hypnosis therapy. Ericksonian hypnotherapy and NLP are excellent tools to help build your confidence and overcome social anxiety so you can live your life to the fullest.
