Hey there,
How was 2025 for you?
Are you thrilled with how your trading went? Or are you looking at the year thinking, “It could've been better”?
If you want 2026 to be different—genuinely different—then pay close attention. I'm going to share two critical factors that can make this your best trading year ever.
And I mean that. This isn't motivational fluff.
The Brutal Truth About “More of the Same”
Here's a foundational truth: more of the same only gets you more of the same.
If you want better results, you need to identify:
- What you need to START doing that you haven't done before
- What you need to STOP doing or do differently
- What's actually holding you back (hint: it's probably not what you think)
Let me share two massive factors that separate the top 10% of profitable traders from everyone else.
Problem #1: You're Going It Alone (And It's Killing Your Progress)
One of the great things about trading? You don't have to deal with employees, customers, or vendors.
It's just you and the markets.
But here's the brutal tradeoff: trading is an incredibly isolated activity.
And here's what makes it worse—traders like you tend to be self-sufficient, capable, above-average people who aren't afraid of challenges. You've figured out most things in your life on your own.
So you jump into trading thinking, “This looks straightforward enough. I'll figure it out.”
Maybe you watch YouTube videos, listen to podcasts, read some books, take a course on a new strategy. But you're still fundamentally going it alone.
Why This Is a Massive Problem
Trading isn't easy. It's not entry-level just because there are no barriers to entry.
This is a profession. And if you want to make consistent money—let alone quit your day job—you need to operate like a professional and aim for the top 10%.
Not admire them. JOIN them.
You can't do that by doing what average traders do. You can't focus solely on strategy, psychology, and discipline like everyone else and expect different results.
The Golf Course Reality Check
I get pushback when I tell traders: “You don't have psychological issues. You have incomplete training issues.”
They say, “Brian, I've been trading for five years. I know how to trade!”
Sure. And I know how to golf. I understand the game. I know what I'm supposed to do.
But that doesn't mean I'm good enough to make a living at it.
There's a massive difference between being ABLE to trade and being PROFICIENT ENOUGH to make a living from trading.
Look, you might have been trading for 5, 10, even 20 years. But if you're stuck at a certain level of skill and proficiency, you're going to struggle—no matter how long you've been at it.
The 10% who make consistent money? We're operating at a completely different skill level. That's just reality.
Problem #2: You're Running a Business Without a Business Plan
Let me give you a different perspective with a quick example.
Imagine you have a brilliant business idea—the next Uber or Airbnb. You take it to a venture capitalist for funding.
The first thing they'll ask: “Do you have a business plan?”
If you don't, they'll say, “Great idea. So what? Go away.”
But here's where it gets interesting. Even if you DO have a solid business plan, they'll look at your executive summary and ask: “Who's executing this plan?”
Because they want to know you have the skills, understanding, and training to make it happen.
Now Apply This to Your Trading
You're in business. Trading is repeated activity for profit—that's literally the definition of a business.
Yet most traders never even think about having a business plan for their trading. They just jump in thinking, “I want to make some money.”
That's it. That's the extent of the planning.
Would you trust any other business with that approach? Of course not.
What You Actually Need
As a trader, you're wearing multiple hats:
- You're the investor in your business
- You're the owner of your business
- You're the manager of your business
- You're the technician doing the actual work
You need to develop yourself in ALL these areas—not just learn how to place trades.
You need to go beyond focusing on discipline and emotional control. There are more skillsets required than just that.
The Time Horizon Solution
Here's something most traders miss: a lot of your emotional jumpiness and mistakes come from having no view beyond today.
When your time horizon is just “this trade” or “this week,” everything feels monumentally important. Every loss feels catastrophic.
But when you can see the full year ahead—when you have a plan that extends beyond just today—you calm down. Each trade becomes one small step on a longer path.
The pressure evaporates. You make better decisions.
