One of biggest dangers is when you think you’re safe…
when you’re not.
I found out the hard way just recently. This is what
happened, and I *thought* I had everything under control.
I received a Skype chat message from a friend of mine in
Mexico, and it looked a little odd, although brief. It
simply said, “look at this” followed by a link to a jpg
file.
He wasn’t online at the time for me to send a response,
so I proceeded anyway, but with caution since it didn’t
seem quite like normal.
When I clicked on the link, it downloaded an .scr file
and my browser’s download system popped up the usual
warning about “This type of file”.
Now he and I are friends, and we talk about all sorts of
things, and we share links to cool stuff quite regularly,
so I figured I’d check it out but I’d run a virus scan
on the file… just in case.
The program scanned the file, and found nothing wrong, so
I opened it.
Big mistake.
Immediately my Skype wigged out, went into “Do Not Disturb”
mode and wouldn’t open for me to do anything, including
shut it down.
Next thing I know, I’m getting emails from about half the
people in my contact list saying that they got this funky
message from me on Skype.
So what happened?
You got it. I got hit with a virus and my supposedly
“good” and “reliable” antivirus software didn’t protect me.
Here I was thinking that I was safe trusting the protection
software that my ISP had selected and provided to me. It
only makes sense to think that a big company like Road
Runner would have chosen pretty reliable software.
Since they had a decent reputation and it was free, that’s
what I’d been using.
Sometimes you get what you pay for.
Okay, back to the story. I got hold of Skype and asked
them about this virus and how to get rid of it. They
replied that only two software companies had the fix
for it.
I hadn’t heard of either of them, but checked them both
out and found a very pleasant surprise.
Better than Norton and all the other big names.

I like good stuff, and usually look for the best.
Now for years, I used Norton Utilities by Semantec, just
because they were far and away the best. But a few years
ago, their software got so big and bulky that it just
bogged down every machine that I put it on.
I wound up going with different utilities from different
companies and had settled on McAfee for a while and then
about a year ago, had shifted to the protection suite from
Computer Associates. Again, primarily because if RoadRunner
was recommending them, they should be good.
Now the cool thing about what I found is that one of the
two companies that had the answer for the Skype virus
actually is BETTER than Norton at detecting viruses. They
have the independent testing results right on their site.

I downloaded the software and feel a whole lot safer and
more secure now. The first time I ran it, it found a number
of infections that CA didn’t – and got rid of them.
Consequently, my machine is also running much better from
having a lot of junk like spyware and adware cleaned out –
that I didn’t know was there before.
You can download and check it out yourself for free at

Again, you can download the full working version for
no cost, so give it a try and see what it finds on your
machine, before a problem appears that creates hours of
headache.
I did and am very glad about it.
Better to know you’re safe than to simply think you are.
Cheers
Brian
P.S. Go with the best. I didn’t and it cost me time,
money and embarrassment. Get your machine checked right
now and save yourself all three.
